Look at this gorgeous grin! This dog is absolutely adorable! He looks like the happiest guy in the world. Unfortunately, Pen #136, an adult male pit bull, has somehow landed in an animal control facility. Despite his infectious grin, the fact that he was born a pit bull is a strike against this guy. He really needs someone special to bail him out!
The Shelter thinks that Pen #136 is a 1 year old black and white pit bull who is very playful, active, gentle, and super affectionate!!! He came in as a stray and is available for adoption, rescue or euthanasia beginning April 10th.
If you are interested in adopting Smiley Pen #136, please contact Gwinnett County Animal Control immediately at 770-339-3200.

Beautiful Glory Needs a Wonderful Home Where She Can Retire, McDonough, GA
It's just heartbreaking to see senior pets dumped off at animal control facilities. After giving years of utterly faithful devotion to their previous owners, they are simply abandoned, when the thing they deserve most is a warm bed and a gentle hand.
I saw a plea for this beautiful senior black lab through Saving Georgia Dogs. Glory 4/4-1036, a senior female black lab is located at the Henry County Animal Control Shelter in McDonough, GA. Sadly, at Henry County AC, a pet's time is not unlimited. Can you offer this beautiful, dignified senior lady a comfortable place to retire? Do you know a rescue organization that has room for this beautiful girl? If so, please contact the Henry County Animal Control Shelter at 770-288-PETS (7387) immediately!

Update 6/2: I am thrilled to report that beautiful Glory has been adopted! If you are considering adopting a dog, please consider a "senior" or "special needs" dog.

Cutie Crystal Needs a Home! Georgia
Look at this cutie pie! What a unique mix! You can keep your puggles, I think I'll take this girl! She looks to be part beagle, part dobie. Does that make her a "beagleman" or perhaps a "dogle"?
Crystal 72778 is a 10 month old female beagle/doberman cross in desperate need of a new home. Her adoption fee is $110.00 which includes vaccinations, spay, rabies, and de-worming. Do you have room in your heart and home for this Georgia peach before her time is up?
If you can adopt Crystal, please contact Lowndes County Animal Services immediately!

Are You Midnight's Good Luck Charm?
Black cats, like black dogs, are much less likely to be adopted from shelters and pounds. Sadly, many people still associate black cats with "bad luck." Black cats in shelters also often get overlooked in favor of "flashier" cats like Siamese, long-hairs, orangies, Maine Coons, etc. Black cats and "plain jane" tabbies are usually the first to go down in high-kill shelters, who are starting to see a huge influx of cats and kittens as kitten season begins. This guy really breaks my heart. Midnight looks exactly like my mom's cat, Max. I tried to convince her that Max needed a buddy, but considering the fact that my mom is in Minnesota and Midnight is in Georgia, it just doesn't work. Can you give Midnight a home?
Midnight 08-1259 is a black adult male domestic short-hair cat in desperate need of a new home. He just loves attention! If you can help Midnight, please contact the Lee County Animal Shelter immediately.

Catnappers: Helping Feral Caretakers
I ran across a wonderful organization called Catnappers, located in Albany, Georgia. This organization is dedicated to helping feral cats by providing assistance, education, and resources to feral cat caretakers.
One of the major ways they are helping feral cats is through their low-cost spay and neuter program. Catnappers sponsors low-cost spay and neuter clinics, and clinics especially for feral cat caretakers. Through sponsoring T-N-R (Trap-Neuter-Return), Catnappers is assisting caring individuals to help feral cats.
So how can you help this awesome program? Sponsor a spay! Click here to donate to this wonderful cause! Feral cat caretakers can also apply for assistance from Catnappers directly through their website.

Beautiful Brownie is Looking for a New Home, Georgia
Isn't Brownie a knock-out? I don't think I've ever seen a dog that looked like her before. Now Brownie is what I would call a real "designer dog." Brownie is a most likely an Australian Cattle Dog/Labrador Retriever mix. She's about 5 months old, so she is still just a puppy! She gets along well with other dogs, and she loves to play. One of Brownie's favorite past-times is to hang out in the grass and watch the world go by. Are you the special someone Brownie is looking for?
Sadly, Brownie is located at an animal control facility, which means her time is extremely limited! Douglas County Animal Control works hard to save its pets, but resources and space are always limited. Douglas County also recently received a huge influx of pets due to the eviction of a trailer park. If Brownie is not what you are looking for, Douglas County has all sorts of wonderful dogs and cats in need of new homes. If you live in the area, please consider adopting a pet -- you will be saving a life! If you can't adopt or don't live in the area, please consider cross-posting on behalf of these pets.
If you are interested in adopting Brownie or another pet from Douglas County AC, please contact them immediately!

Winging Cat Rescue Long-Sleeve T-Shirt
I bought this black women's long-sleeve t-shirt from Winging Cat Rescue's Online Store a couple months ago, and it has since become one of my favorites!
Winging Cat Rescue is a licensed rescue in the state of Georgia, and it is one of my favorite resuce organizations. WCR rescues cats from death row in Georgia and transports them to adoption centers and sanctuaries in the Northeast where they are adopted into new, loving homes. WCR also helps rural Georgia communities by sponsoring low-cost spay and neuter clinics. They also help rural shelters by spaying and neutering impounded and surrendered cats, and providing vaccines to prevent the spread of common shelter illnesses. Proceeds from the sale of items from the Winging Cat Rescue Online Store goes directly to help them in their mission to save Georgia's unwanted cats.

Please Spread the Word and Help Sadie Find a Home
It was her eyes that got me...
Sadie needs a little extra love and patience. Do you have room in your heart and home for Sadie?
Sadie has a sad story...she really deserves a new home. Please stop by Houndsgood, and read Sadie's story.
Sadie is located at Heard County Animal Control, located in Franklin, Georgia.
Heard County Animal Control Center
11818 Ga Hwy 100
Franklin, GA 30217
Phone: 706-675-3570
The bad news is that she is still waiting for someone special to come save her and her time is running out.
The good news is that her supposed "dog aggression" issue might not be as serious as previously thought. She is currently housed with a canine roommate, and they get along just fine.
Heard County Animal Control DOES do out-of-state adoptions, so even if you are not located in Georgia, you can adopt Sadie!
If you can help Sadie, please contact:

Ditty Dats and Dogs Rescue is sponsoring a Breed Identification Contest to raise funds for Trap-Neuter-Return projects in Berkeley County and Jefferson County, West Virginia.Kelli was rescued as a stray in North Carolina, and happily, through the efforts of Ditty Dats and Dogs Rescue, she was adopted and is living happily with her forever family. As you can see from her photograph, it's anyone's guess as to what breed she is.
Well, her forever family has decided to quench their curiosity and have her genetically tested to determine what breed she is. The test will give up to three breeds, and the percentages of each.
Ditty Dats and Dogs Rescue is sponsoring a contest to see who can guess her breeds!
You can make one guess for a donation of $10.00, and you can make additional guesses for $5.00 each after the first. The person with the closest guess after the test results are in will receive half of the money raised. The other half will go to sponsor Trap-Neuter-Return projects. Update on Newnan-Coweta Fundraiser
A few weeks ago, I posted about how $10.00 could help save a life. I also had a widget on the side of my page where you could donate to the Newnan-Coweta Humane Society.
Newnan-Coweta Humane Society is located in Newnan, Georgia. As you may be aware, Georgia's pet overpopulation problem is at epidemic proportions. Rural animal control shelters often have less than a 10% adoption rate. That means that hundreds of pets are dying needlessly every day in Georgia. NCHS works tirelessly to rescue "death row" dogs and cats, but with limited resources, they cannot save them all.
Parade magazine and the Case Foundation partnered with Network for Good and Six Degrees to launch America’s Giving Challenge; an initiative to inspire and reward greater giving through online technology. To learn more, visit Parade.com. NCHS participated in this fundraiser, seeking donations from around the country, in the hopes of raising enough money to build a "no-kill" shelter. The fundraiser officially ended on January 31, 2008.
The top eight charities with the GREATEST NUMBER of unique donations will win a $50,000 grant, and the top 100 charities will win a $1,000 grant. Although the results are not yet official, NCHS did not place in the top 8 charities.

Check out Saving Shelter Pets
If you are interested in getting involved in animal rescue online, I can't think of a better place to start than Saving Shelter Pets, Inc. If you have a couple minutes, please stop by their site, explore, and introduce yourself in the forum. I look forward to seeing you there!
Saving Shelter Pets, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal welfare organization with members located throughout the United States and Canada.
Saving Shelter Pets works to eliminate euthanasia of healthy companion animals as a method of population control through rescue and transport, spay and neuter, and other innovative programs.
At this time, Saving Shelter Pets' primary focus is on high-kill shelters in Georgia. Georgia, and other areas in the Southeast, face a monumental pet overpopulation problem. Every day, thousands of perfectly adoptable animals are euthanized because there are simply not enough homes for them all. While many shelters in Georgia have made great strides toward ending the unnecessary killing of healthy pets, many shelters simply cannot handle the numbers of animals coming through their doors. Even worse, however, is that many shelters still use the gas chamber as a method of "euthanasia." This method of killing pets has been almost universally condemned as inhumane. To learn more about euthanasia by gas chamber, please click here. (WARNING, VERY GRAPHIC AND SAD).
SSP strives to end the unnecessary euthanization of companion animals through both long range programs and rescue efforts aimed at those pets in imminent danger of euthanization. Though its Rescue and Transportation program, Saving Shelter Pets has rescued hundreds of dogs and cats from imminent death and transported them to wonderful no-kill rescues and sanctuaries in other areas. From there, these pets are adopted into loving new homes.
SSP has a wonderful intervention program called Puppy Promises that keeps litters of unwanted puppies out of the shelters and spays the mother dog.
SSP also has a wonderful spay and neuter program providing spay and neuter assistance in several counties in Georgia, and recently, in Ohio, as well. Spaying and Neutering is the KEY to ending the pet overpopulation problem.
In addition to the on-the-ground work done by Saving Shelter Pets, the organization also has a very active and very FRIENDLY forum for pet lovers, rescuers, and others looking to help animals in need. Join the forum today to see how you can help.
